CRN Registration

Designs for boilers, pressure vessels, tube and shell heat exchangers, plate heat exchangers, valves, flow meters, pipe fittings, B16.5 flanges, pressure coils, piping skids and piping systems聽to be installed in Canada shall be submitted to the regulatory authority to obtain CRN (Canadian Registration Number). We do review, code calculations聽of聽designs. We also help do submissions聽of design package聽to each jurisdiction to聽get CRN.

Canadian Registration Number or CRN Number:
A Canadian Registration Number (CRN) is defined by CSA B51 4.3 as a number issued by the regulatory authority to designs when they are accepted and registered. It typically consists of a letter, four digits, and a decimal point followed by up to ten digits and/or two letters. The first letter and four digits are part of a sequential numbering system used by the issuing province or territory. The first digit/letter聽to the right of the decimal point indicates聽the first聽province/territory it is registered in, which is detailed below:
1 - British Columbia聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 2 - Alberta
3 - Saskatchewan聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽4 - Manitoba

For example, M1234.56 means design was first registered in Ontario and then accepted by Quebec.

Boiler & pressure vessels:
Per TSSA guidelines, all pressure vessels and boilers must be registered prior to fabrication except the following:

  1. a low pressure boiler that has either a wetted heating surface of 30 square feet or less, or a power rating of 30 KW or less;
  2. a boiler in a hot liquid heating system that has no obstructions (valves) to free circulation between the boiler and an expansion tank which is vented to atmosphere;
  3. a boiler having a heating surface of 10 square feet or less;
  4. a pressure vessel that that contains a gas, vapour or liquid at maximum working pressure of 15 psi or less;
  5. a pressure vessel that contains liquids not more hazardous than water at a temperature of 150F or less and at a maximum working pressure of 250 psi or less;
  6. a pressure vessel for domestic use that has a internal diameter of 24鈥 or less for the storage of hot water at temperature no greater than 212F and the heat input is 120KW or less;
  7. a pressure vessel that is used exclusively for hydraulic purposes at a temperature no greater than 150F;
  8. a pressure vessel that has an internal diameter of 24鈥 or less in a liquid pumping system at a temperature no greater than 150F and that contains air or an inert gas compressed to serve as a cushion;
  9. pumps, compressors, turbines, generators, engines, and hydraulic or pneumatic cylinders where the primary design considerations or stresses, or both , are derived from the functional requirements of the device;
  10. a pressure vessel having a capacity of 1.5 cubic feet or less shall be registered as a category 鈥淗鈥 fitting;
  11. a pressure vessel having an internal diameter of 6鈥 or less shall be registered as a category 鈥淗鈥 fitting.

Fittings:
Fittings refer to pipe fittings, flanges, valves, expansion joints and flexible hoses, filters and gauges etc. Fittings are classified as follows in CSA-B51:
